#4049 Holy crap that gif is perfect icon_lol

Guy Sebastian the FIRST Australia Idol.

He's basically our Kelly Clarkson. Nobody remembers any of the Idols except the very first one. Josh Thomas i alright, I first saw him on Talkin' Bout Your Generation when he was repping Gen Y - this was an Australian sort of panel show but like trivia. I haven't seen his show Please Like Me but I hear it's quite the hit. I have never watched Neighbours or Home & Away and am proud of that fact lol. So nope didn't know RK when he was on it.

Have you seen all of Ja'mie's stuff? We Can Be Heroes?

#4050 Also as a female Australian who was in high school when Ja'mie first hit our screens..... holy shit she is bang on the embodiment of private school bitch it's why the character is so successful because it's SOOOO GOOD.

I'm 100% sure I have said:

Haha! yeah I just randomly caught a few episodes of Home and Away and saw him in it like decades ago and thought "oh my god that guy is so hot!"

Also, what about Jessica Mauboy? Isn't she basically Jennifer Hudson? didn't win but got so much more successful than the winner.

I love Ja'mie and pretty much everything Chris Lilley's done, though I haven't seen Jonah from Tonga yet. Did you watch Angry Boys?

#4088 Haha! The songs in it are hilarious though. Americans are always super sensitive and insecure about that stuff. Which is funny.

#4096 I remember when they got offended when a bunch of mostly INDIAN doctors in australia painted their faces black (and one white LOL) and sung a jackson 5 song on tv.

Nobody here knew it was meant to be offensive (it was like a halloween costume) until Harry Connick jr went OFF live on tv and walked off the show and called us all racist like um wot. Lmao

"We don't do this IN AMERICA. We have RESPECT"

Like..... pretty sure you have the KKK and lynched black people in the 60s and still have hate crimes lol don't talk to us. ♡

Wow, I wanna see that on youtube! Yeah America is super insecure about that type of stuff because it is still such a massive issue. Especially now too with just how divided this country is politically and socially at the moment. Which is scary because usually the main solution to these sorts of things is going to war with someone to unite the place. (I'm trying so hard not to talk politics right now lol)

Context" Hey Hey It's Saturday used to be a hugely popular show in Australia. A few years ago they decided to do a one off 25th anniversary special where they brought back acts from the show - so the Indian doctors actually performed the same act years ago when they were just medical students (but back then they all had black paint on their faces coz MJ was still black).

At the end they take the piss out of him being American tho :P

#4117 Wow, yeah that would never fly in the US. The whole back half with Harry Connick Jr. was so awkward, you could tell he was so uncomfortable and then to be faced with some award...yeesh. It's always very interesting how differently cultures treat stuff like that.

Spoiler: show
Yeah that makes sense! I think the offense most people took to it in Australia wasn't just Harry but shows like The View and stuff had features about how we were racist and stuff without considering that we like..... don't have "African Americans" here, nor do we have that same culture of what we do and don't take offense to. Kind of like how American media finds nudity super TABOO but in Europe it's like whatever. We have black face history with Aboriginal people (our native population) but at this stage nobody really associates face paint with racial commentary by default. Like S.mouse in Angry Boys - we get that the joke is he's a shit rapper who is randomly successful from one song - the character just happens to be black and because Chris Lilley does all the characters he is in blackface. I think the difference is that in Australia blackface (or yellowface, which is what Chris Lilley also did in We Can Be Heroes when he played an Asian guy, and also in Angry Boys when he plays an Asian "tiger-mum", or whatever you would call a white man pretending to be a pacific islander as is the case for Jonah) is used - at this stage - exclusively in parody. I mean I guess it's hard to justify to people from other cultures lol - objectively it looks pretty racist - it's just the way people view it here - we know it's a joke so we don't take it like racist commentary :P We also do it white people - like Chris Lilley again with Ja'mie/Pat/the twins/etc and the Aussie CLASSIC Kath & Kim. :P

End culture lesson.... :P
